What’s Better: Football or Rugby

Rugby is the football of Europe. Many people wonder why rugby balls are oval-shaped. The original rugby balls were made of pig bladders, giving it its oval shape.

Football and rugby are similar sports, but they both are completely different from each other at the same time. For instance, football has fewer players on the field at a time, while rugby has more players. They are both known to be very dangerous when it comes to injuries.

Rugby was invented by William Webb Ellis in 1823. Rugby was accidentally invented when a boy accidentally ran toward the opponent’s line rather than running at his own in a game of schoolyard game. The kids playing with him all decided that they liked that way better. The trending game spread pretty quickly.

Football wasn’t a true sport until the 1880s. Football was invented by a rugby player who had changed the rules to the game of rugby a little bit. It became very popular very fast and became the most popular sport in America.

“Personally, I believe that Rugby is a better sport than football because it feels more like family,”  junior Sean Wakley said. “It is also more entertaining because you can get into fights with people”

Rugby is a team sport that has an oval ball, much like football, that people can kick, pass and carry the ball and try to get it into the opponent’s goal line. If they succeed to do this, the team that goes into their opponent’s goal line would gain points. Teams can also kick the ball into the goal post over the opponent’s goal line to score points.

Football is the most popular sport in the US, with viewers that top any other sports in America. While in Europe, Rugby is a lot more popular than American football.

Football has the highest concussion rate than any other sport played in America, while rugby has a very high rate of spinal injuries. There are over 100 rugby athletes that have been paralyzed while playing.

In America, football is a whole lot more popular than rugby, with over 16.5 million people (on average) watching every pro football game. And for the 2019 Super Bowl, about 98.2 million people watched.

Rugby is a very popular sport in England, with over two million people, are registered to have played, kids and professional players in the last season, while there are just over 125,000 registered players in America.

In England, Rugby season starts in mid-October, while football in America starts in early September. There are 32 National Football teams, while there are only twelve professional rugby teams in England.

When it comes to sports, being close to the rest of the team is very important. “Rugby definitely has more of a close family feel because we all know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. We always go out to eat, even with the opposing team to spread the friendship.” Wakley said.

There is a very low percentage of students at Gull Lake who play rugby. So, if you’re looking for a new sport that can take up some of our free time, try rugby out.

Review on Gull Lakes PAC show

The Performing Arts Company put on an amazing show this past weekend. The club performed The Man who Came to Dinner by William Keighley. They spent a lot of time perfecting their lines and movements along with them. All the time that they put into the play surely was worth it.

The Man who came to Dinner is about a world-famous radio talkshow host that gets injured on the property of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley and stays with them. There are many characters introduces through the play, like the Stanley kids, the maids of the Stanley house, and some of Mr. Whitesides friends and acquaintances. There are romances formed, friendships made, pranks pulled, and arguments that were argued. But in the end, the beloved Mr. Whiteside got his way.

I went to see the play on Friday the 15th with two of my friends at Gull Lake Middle School. The play lasted longer than I guessed it would, but I’m not complaining. Every scene was very important to the play and was needed.

There were serious times, and there was comedic relief when needed. I personally felt connected to some of the characters, like I knew them.

The crowd gave good reactions, they laughed when something funny would happen or they would nake no noise when a serious conversation would happen.

They all spoke loud enough for the people in the stands to hear but without having to yell. They also were fairly fast when they had to get ready for the next scene.

I could see all of the work that was put into it. From the moment that the first character walked onto the stage until the final bows of the actors, they all did amazing.

Sophomore David McDowall says “I performed best Friday night when the stands were full and the expectations were high”. When I went, the stands were “sold out” and there was not much room to sit down. “There was like, a full house,” says McDowall. McDowall was Richard Stanley in the play, the son of the family that was housing the lead character, Mr. Whiteside.

“We spend approximately two months preparing for this play,” says McDowall “I did my best on Friday night when the pressure was high and we had to set a high standard for what we need to achieve in the next couple of days”.

Overall, the play was very well performed and really set a high bar for me personally because it was the first PAC performance I’ve ever been to, and I know it won’t be the last. I give this play a 9/10
